Jessica Andrade vs Weili Zhang headlines UFC on ESPN+ 15 in China

A UFC Women’s Strawweight Title bout between champion Jessica Andrade and Weili Zhang has been made official for the UFC on ESPN+ 15 card taking place on August 31, 2019 in Shenzhen, China. Brett Okamoto from ESPN.com reported the news first.

The matchup comes as sort of a surprise for the larger MMA community as names like Rose Namajunas, Michelle Waterson and Tatiana Suarez seemed to be in front of Zhang in the title shot race. The UFC finally opted for the Chinese fighter to get the shot and the headlining spot in her home country. She last defeated Tecia Torres by unanimous decision on the UFC 235 card in March.

Jessica Andrade’s first title defense will be in ennemy territory after she just challenged for the belt and won it in her native Brazil against Rose Namajunas by memorable slam KO in a fight where Rose was winning every second of before the finish. Most people wanted to see an automatic rematch but the fact that Namajunas is unsure about fighting again made the UFC look in another direction.
