The highly anticipated matchup between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson will finally happen. The Lightweight title fight is planned to headline the April 18 card in Brooklyn, New York.
This matchup has already been booked four times in the past, but it fell through every time due to injuries. Both have continued their winning ways and they are the most dominant fighters in the Lightweight division right now. This matchup is more inevitable than ever and it is now planned to happen in April 2020.
Khabib Nurmagomedov will try to remain perfect in his MMA career, he owns a 28-0 record. After submitting Conor McGregor in the best selling UFC PPV of all time at UFC 229, he submitted interim champion Dustin Poirier at UFC 242 in Abu Dhabi. Tony Ferguson has always been targeted as Khabib’s greatest test and he is one of the only guys he has yet to defeat at 155.
Tony Ferguson is not undefeated but he has not lost in 8 years. He last tasted defeat in 2012 by decision against Michael Johnson. He has won 12 fights in a row since, securing a UFC Interim title in the process. He was stripped of that belt when he wasn’t able to compete for the title due to an injury. He has still been considered as the number one contender in the UFC’s deepest division for years now.
The Khabib vs Tony fight is not yet official but Nurmagomedov’s manager Ali Abdelaziz revealed that the Russian had signed the bout agreement yesterday. Even Dana White has mentionned that he wanted that fight in April.
The April 18 card will take place at the Barclay’s Center in Brooklyn, New York. It is expected to take place on PPV and should be the UFC 249 if everything goes according to plan.
