Mateo Vogel vs Serhiy Sidey is the fight you don’t know you can’t miss. Here’s why:
First, they are both awesome! I have never seen a fight from Mateo Vogel or from Serhiy Sidey that bored me! Second, they are two of the best prospects on the Canadian MMA scene. And third, they offer us one of the most interesting style matchups possible.
In fact, Mateo Vogel is one hell of a grappler. He made his pro debut at TKO 42 back in March 2018 where he defeated fellow grappler James Clarke by beautiful Triangle Armbar. He followed it up with a win at 145lbs against Stéphane Lavoie at TKO 43 two months later and then defeated Johnny Baldridge in December of 2018 by first round submission once again. He was then matched up against top-ranked Canadian Bantamweight Xavier Alaoui where he lost by Disqualification after an illegal upkick.
All of these fights where super entertaining and showed Mateo’s incredible skills as a grappler. The fighter who trains under Kru Jeff Harrison and Peter Fazekas at New Era Combat Sports will be looking to get back in the win column after his controversial loss last year. He will have in front of him a guy who is without a doubt the most dangerous striker he’s faced yet.
Serhiy Sidey has also found a way to make noise in his short career as a pro. He collected a 4-0 record dating back to his pro debut in June of 2018. In that fight, he defeated Avinash Chowtee by unanimous decision in a memorable back and forth war. He then fought PJ St-Marie at Fighting Alliance 7 and won by second round TKO. He then returned to BTC for a rematch against Chowtee, he finished him by third round TKO that time. Like Mateo, he only fought once in 2019, defeating highly-touted amateur champion Kevin Bastien Popowick by first round head kick KO to keep his perfect record.
Sidey is one of the Ontarians from the Toronto/London/Hamilton/Windsor area who moves around a lot to train. He can often be seen at the Burlington Training Center or at Parabellum MMA and he has been a training partner of Bellator fighter Josh Hill. He is a very opportunistic finisher who can get stuck in back and forth wars on the feet but who always seems to come out on top in these situations. It will also be interesting to see what he looks like at 135 as he is making his Bantamweight debut.
That’s why this fight is so amazing, we’ve got one of the best young grapplers in Canada who finishes everybody on the ground but who has yet to fight a real good technical striker. Facing a striker who uses his superior technique to win close back and forth stand up wars but who has never really faced a grappler of the caliber of Vogel. It’s a good old Striker vs Grappler matchup, but opposing two of the most promising prospects in the country!
That’s why Mateo Vogel vs Serhiy Sidey is the fight you don’t know you can’t miss. They will collide on Saturday February 29, 2020 in Kitchener, Ontario on the BTC 9 event.
