When the negociation issue happened regarding the title fight, it appeared to be on the Covington side. The UFC turned around and tried to book Usman vs Masvidal but it didn’t work out on the Usman side. The UFC even threatened to strip the Nigerian from his title and pulled him from his guest fighter duties in Abu Dhabi this weekend. At that moment, they tried to book Masvidal vs Leon Edwards for the vacant championship, but quickly enough, the talks restarted with the Diaz camp. The final decision was then made to put Diaz vs Masvidal as the headlining bout for the PPV. It will be a 5 round non title fight.
Both fighters are coming off great moments in their careers. Diaz just came back from a 3 year hiatus to defeat Anthony Pettis at UFC 241. He came out this weekend as a huge star, having most of the attention on him before and after the event.
